California Prop 65

What Prop 65 warnings mean

Some products we carry include a California Proposition 65 warning from the manufacturer. Here's what that warning is and what it isn't.

The law

Proposition 65, in plain terms

California's Proposition 65, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, requires businesses to warn Californians about significant exposures to chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.

The state's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) maintains the list of those chemicals.

A Prop 65 warning is a disclosure, not a safety rating.

What to know

Reading a warning

Why you may see one

Some products we carry come with a Prop 65 warning from the manufacturer. When a product carries one, we show it on that product's page.

What it means

It's a disclosure required by California law. It isn't a safety certification.

Safety standards

A warning doesn't replace the safety standards listed on a product page. Those still tell you what the gear is rated for.
