Buying guide

Caps, beanies or hoods?

How much coverage you need depends on your position and how much spatter you throw.

Welding caps

A cotton cap with a short brim, worn backwards or forwards under the helmet. It keeps sparks out of your hair and sweat out of your eyes.

FR hoods

An FR cotton hood covers your head, ears and neck, and a drape adds shoulder coverage. A good choice for overhead and out-of-position work.

Aramid hoods

Para-aramid sock hoods add heat and cut resistance, useful in foundries and hot work.

Fit under a helmet

Caps and hoods should sit flat under your helmet headgear without bunching or shifting the helmet's position.

Good to know

Why cotton caps work

The classic welding cap is 100% cotton. Cotton doesn't melt like synthetics do, and the snug fit keeps sparks from landing in your hair.

For more protection, especially overhead, step up to an FR hood with a neck drape.

Protect what's under the helmet too.

FAQ

Cap and hood questions

Is a cotton welding cap flame resistant?

Standard cotton caps aren't FR rated, but cotton doesn't melt. For FR protection, choose an FR hood.

How do I size a welding cap?

Caps come in sizes based on head circumference. Measure around your head just above the ears and compare to the listing.

Why are aramid bibs and capes in this collection?

They use the same aramid materials as the sock hood and are often bought together. You'll find the full range in Cape Sleeves & Bibs.

Can I wear a hood under my helmet?

Yes, FR hoods are made to wear under a welding helmet. Adjust your headgear so the helmet sits securely.
