Buying guide
How cape sleeves work
A cape sleeve covers your shoulders and arms. Add a bib in front and you have most of the protection of a jacket with an open back.
Cape plus bib
Most cape sleeves clip to a separate bib. Pick the bib length you want, from short chest bibs to full-length aprons.
Leather or FR cotton
Split cowhide is for heavy spatter. FR cotton is lighter and cooler for long shifts and TIG work.
Para-aramid
Aramid capes and bibs handle heat and resist cuts, which helps around hot, sharp parts in fabrication and foundry work.
Stay cooler
With your back open, heat escapes. That's a big reason welders choose cape sleeves over jackets in hot shops.
Good to know
Getting the fit right
Cape sleeves are sized like jackets, by chest. The sleeves should reach your wrists with your arms extended so they overlap your gloves.
Bibs usually attach with snaps or clips. Check that the bib you choose is compatible with the cape, and pick the length for the work you do.
Jacket-level arm protection, without the heat.
FAQ
Cape sleeve questions
Do cape sleeves come with a bib?
Some do and some are sold separately. Check the listing. Many welders pick the bib length separately.
Is a cape sleeve as protective as a jacket?
On your arms, shoulders and chest, a leather cape sleeve gives similar protection. Your back is open, so it's not the right choice when spatter can fall behind you.
What's a front and back bib?
It's a para-aramid piece that covers both your chest and back, useful when you need protection from heat and sharp edges on both sides.
What size cape sleeve should I get?
Use your jacket size. If you're between sizes, go up so the sleeves reach your gloves.
