How to pick a welding blanket

Weight and coating tell you most of what you need to know.

Coating

Coatings like vermiculite and acrylic raise heat resistance and lock in fiberglass fibers. Uncoated blankets are lighter and more affordable.

Weight

Measured in ounces per square yard. Heavier blankets, like 30 to 36 oz, handle more heat and slag. Lighter blankets drape and fold more easily.

Size

Pre-cut blankets are ready to use. Rolls let you cut custom sizes for large areas, fixtures or equipment covers.

Horizontal or vertical

Blankets on the floor take falling slag and need more heat resistance. Hanging blankets block sparks and can be lighter.

Good to know

Handling fiberglass

Plain fiberglass can shed small fibers that irritate skin. Coated blankets lock those fibers in, which makes them more comfortable to handle and longer lasting.

Wear gloves and long sleeves when you cut fiberglass rolls, and store blankets folded or rolled where they won't get crushed or soaked.

Stop sparks before they become a fire.

FAQ

Welding blanket questions

What weight welding blanket do I need?

For light spatter and hanging use, 16 to 18 oz is common. For floors, heavy slag and grinding, heavier blankets in the 24 to 36 oz range handle more heat.

Is a welding blanket fireproof?

Welding blankets resist ignition and handle heat, but no blanket is fireproof. Each one has a heat limit. Check the listing for intended use.

Can I use a welding blanket as a curtain?

You can hang a blanket to block sparks, but blankets don't let light through. Use vinyl curtains when people need to see into the weld area.

Do you sell blankets by the roll?

Yes. Blanket rolls come in widths up to 60 inches so you can cut what you need.
