Buying guide

Choosing a welding apron

Length, material and style decide how much an apron covers and how it moves.

Length

36 inch aprons cover to mid-thigh. 42 inch reach the knee. 48 inch cover below the knee for seated work and grinding.

Material

Split cowhide handles heavy spatter. Goatskin is lighter. FR cotton is the coolest and lightest option for TIG and light MIG.

Split leg

Split-leg aprons wrap each leg separately, so you can walk, climb and kneel without the apron getting in the way.

Bib top

A bib apron covers your chest as well as your lap. It's handy when you're bent over a bench or table.

Good to know

Apron or jacket?

An apron covers your front and legs but leaves your arms and back open. It's a good choice for bench work where spatter falls downward onto your lap.

For overhead or out-of-position work, pair an apron with sleeves, or switch to a full jacket.

Bench work drops sparks on your lap. Cover it.

FAQ

Welding apron questions

What length welding apron should I get?

For standing bench work, 36 or 42 inches is common. For seated welding or grinding, a 48 inch apron covers more of your legs.

Are FR cotton aprons good for welding?

They're good for TIG and light MIG. For heavier spatter, a leather apron gives more protection.

What's a split-leg apron?

It's an apron divided down the middle with straps for each leg. It moves with you better than a single panel.

Can I wear an apron over FR clothing?

Yes, that's a common setup. The apron adds protection where spatter lands most.
