Stick Welding Gloves
Stick welding (SMAW) runs hot and throws heavy spatter, so these gloves are built thick. Split cowhide and elkskin, long gauntlet cuffs, insulating liners and Kevlar-stitched seams that hold up shift after shift.
Buying guide
How to pick a stick glove
Stick gloves are about heat first. These four details tell you how much a glove can take.
Leather weight
Split cowhide is the classic stick leather: thick, heat tolerant and affordable. Elkskin stays softer after repeated heat exposure.
Liners
Cotton, foam or Nomex-lined backs add a barrier between the hot leather and your skin. More liner means more heat protection and a little less feel.
Cuff length
Look for a long gauntlet cuff, often 4 inches or more, that overlaps your jacket sleeve so spatter can't fall into the gap.
Aluminized back
An aluminized (reflective) back bounces radiant heat away from your hand. It's a good pick for high-amperage or close-up work.

Common stick glove leathers
Every leather has a tradeoff between heat resistance, feel and price.
| Leather | Heat | Feel | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Split cowhide | Good | Low | Thick and durable, the most common choice |
| Grain cowhide | Good | Medium | Smoother and more flexible than split |
| Elkskin | Very good | Medium | Stays soft after heat exposure |
| Pigskin back | Fair | Medium | Breathable, often paired with a cowhide palm |
Good to know
Spatter is what wears gloves out
Each spark that lands on a glove dries out a tiny spot of leather. Over time, those spots stiffen and crack. That's normal, and it's why stick gloves have more leather to give.
If your gloves are hardening fast, try a glove with an aluminized back or one with a reinforced palm, and keep a backup pair so each one has time to cool down and dry out between uses.
Thick leather. Long cuffs. Seams that don't quit.
FAQ
Stick glove questions
Why are stick welding gloves so stiff?
Thick leather and liners take time to break in. Wearing them for a few shifts usually softens them. Elkskin gloves start out softer if stiffness bothers you.
Can I use stick gloves for MIG?
Yes, they'll protect you well. You'll give up some trigger feel, so many welders keep a lighter MIG glove for longer wire-feed runs.
What's a glove extender?
It's a leather sleeve that slips over your cuff to extend coverage up the forearm. It's handy when you want more coverage without switching to a full cape sleeve.
How long should stick gloves last?
It depends on amperage, position and hours under the hood. Rotating two pairs and letting them dry fully between uses tends to stretch their life.
Do you have stick gloves for women?
Yes. The AngelFire Stick/MIG glove from Black Stallion is cut for women's hands.
