Leather Welding Gear

When spatter is heavy, leather is the answer. Split cowhide and grain pigskin jackets, aprons, bibs and cape sleeves, many with Kevlar stitching and FR cotton linings, for stick, flux-core and high-amperage MIG work.

Buying guide

Choosing leather welding gear

Leather protects better than fabric, but it's heavier and warmer. Pick the coverage your work needs.

Split cowhide

The workhorse leather for welding gear. Thick, heat tolerant and durable, it handles heavy spatter and slag.

Grain pigskin

Lighter and more flexible than split cowhide, with a smoother finish. Black Stallion's BSX pigskin jacket is a premium example.

Kevlar stitching

Seams are the weak point on leather gear. Kevlar thread resists burning from spatter, so seams hold up longer.

Coverage options

A full jacket covers everything. Cape sleeves and bibs cover arms and chest with less heat. Aprons protect your front and legs.

Good to know

Breaking in leather gear

New leather is stiff. It softens with wear and heat. Moving through your normal range of motion for a few shifts helps it shape to you.

Store leather gear hanging, away from direct sun and heat, and let it dry naturally if it gets wet.

Heavy spatter calls for real leather.

FAQ

Leather welding gear questions

Is leather better than FR cotton for welding?

Leather gives more protection from heavy spatter and slag. FR cotton is lighter and cooler. Many welders use both depending on the job.

What's a cape sleeve?

It's a leather or FR yoke that covers your shoulders and arms, usually paired with a bib that clips on in front. It's cooler than a full jacket.

Why are leather jackets so heavy?

Thick split cowhide is what gives heavy protection. If weight is a concern, look at grain pigskin or hybrid jackets.

How do I clean leather welding gear?

Brush off dust and spatter and wipe with a damp cloth. Avoid soaking leather or drying it near direct heat.
