Buying guide
Finding your FR shirt
FR shirts look a lot like regular work shirts. Here's what to check before you buy.
Check the label
NFPA 2112 means it's rated for flash fire. NFPA 70E with an arc rating means it's rated for electrical arc flash. Many shirts carry both.
Fabric
FR cotton is soft and breathable. 88/12 cotton-nylon blends hold their shape and resist wear better over time.
Weight and comfort
7 oz is the sweet spot for shirts: light enough for summer, protective enough for daily FR wear. Heavier 12 oz fleece tops add warmth.
Men's and women's
Black Stallion BSX and AngelFire shirts give you men's and women's fits in the same protection level.
Good to know
Tuck it in, button it up
FR shirts work best when they're worn the way they're tested: sleeves down, cuffs and collar buttoned and the shirt tucked in. Rolled sleeves and open collars leave skin exposed.
If you layer, keep the outer layer FR too. A regular jacket over an FR shirt can ignite.
Looks like a work shirt. Protects like FR.
FAQ
FR shirt questions
Are FR shirts hot to wear?
Lightweight 7 oz FR cotton shirts breathe well. Heavier weights and fleece are warmer, so pick your weight for the season.
Can I iron FR shirts?
Yes, most FR cotton shirts can be ironed at normal cotton settings. Avoid starch, which can be flammable.
Do FR shirts lose their protection over time?
Inherent FR fabrics keep their protection for the life of the garment. Treated FR cotton is designed to last through the garment's normal service life when you follow the care label. Retire any shirt with holes, tears or heavy contamination.
Do you have women's FR shirts?
Yes. The AngelFire line from Black Stallion includes women's FR work shirts.
