Flame-resistant workwear

FR Clothing

Flame-resistant (FR) clothing self-extinguishes when the flame source is removed, so it won't keep burning or melt onto your skin. Shop shirts, pants, coveralls, jackets and hoodies made for welders, refinery crews and electrical workers.

How to shop FR clothing

Three things tell you most of what you need to know about an FR garment.

Standards

NFPA 2112 covers protection from flash fire. NFPA 70E covers electrical arc flash hazards. Many of our garments meet both.

Fabric weight

Measured in ounces per square yard. A 7 oz shirt is lighter and cooler. A 9 to 14 oz jacket or pant gives more protection and durability.

Fabric type

FR cotton is treated to resist flame. 88/12 blends are 88% cotton and 12% nylon, which adds strength and abrasion resistance.

Visibility

Reflective trim and hi-vis colors help you get seen on roadsides, at night and around moving equipment.

Compare

Picking a fabric weight

Heavier fabric usually means more protection and durability, and a warmer garment.

WeightCommon garmentsGood for
7 ozShirts, T-shirts, light coverallsHot weather, all-day wear, layering
9 ozJackets, pants, coverallsWelding and general FR work
10 to 14 ozPants, hoodies, heavy jacketsCold weather, heavier spatter, rough work

Good to know

FR vs arc-rated

All arc-rated clothing is flame resistant, but not all FR clothing has an arc rating. An arc rating, shown in cal/cm2, is a tested measure of how much electrical arc energy the fabric can handle.

If you work around energized electrical equipment, you'll likely need arc-rated garments. Your employer's NFPA 70E program sets the level.

FR doesn't stop the fire. It stops the fire from staying on you.

FAQ

FR clothing questions

What does FR mean?

FR stands for flame resistant. FR fabrics resist igniting and stop burning once the flame source is removed, unlike regular fabrics that can keep burning or melt.

What's NFPA 2112?

It's the standard for flame-resistant garments that protect workers from short-duration flash fire exposure, common in oil, gas and chemical work.

Can I wear a regular T-shirt under FR clothing?

Synthetic underlayers can melt in a fire. Choose cotton, wool or FR base layers under your FR clothing.

How do I wash FR clothing?

Follow the garment's care label. In general, skip bleach and fabric softener, which can affect FR performance and hide flammable residue.

Do you have women's FR clothing?

Yes. The AngelFire line from Black Stallion includes FR shirts and other pieces cut for women.
